Employee Spotlight - Jack Moseley

Our employee spotlight series aims to highlight the brilliant work of our team at Oracle Environmental. We begin this series with Jack Moseley, Environmental Consultant, based in our Hampshire Office.

What does your day-to-day role at Oracle look like?

I have been at OEE since October 2019 and I'm currently an Environmental Consultant. My day-to-day work is largely focused on the management of domestic oil spill projects in the insurance sector, including the provision of reports, health and safety paperwork and risk assessments under CDM regulations, direct liaison with a variety of stakeholders and the management and supervision of subcontractors. Over the last year, I have also been developing our Freshwater Ecology business sector.

What does your work on freshwater ecology entail?

Our in-house team of monitoring technicians can assess water quality in-situ and can also collect surface water samples and riverine macroinvertebrate samples for subsequent laboratory analysis and interpretation using RIVPACS/RICT and ASPT, to provide Water Framework Directive compliant results. We can use this data to assess the ecological status of a watercourse after a pollution incident or to asses the impact of chronic pollution.

What sparked your interest in freshwater ecology?

My university course included a number of units that covered topics relevant to freshwater ecology such as 'River Processes', 'Ecology, Plants and Human Impacts', 'Environmental Pollution', etc. Having always been an avid angler, I took special interest in the water quality of British rivers. My final year dissertation project was titled 'Measuring the Algal Response to Excess Nutrients in Rivers' and was undertaken in association with the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in Wallingford.

What’s your favourite part about working for Oracle Environmental Experts?

Oracle staff are keen to share their knowledge and many staff members have their own specialist subject areas. This means that any project-related queries are answered quickly, and junior staff can always talk to approachable senior staff within the company for advice.

What sets Oracle Environmental Experts apart from previous companies you’ve worked for?

The company really invests in their employees and always goes the extra mile to provide training and support. Not only does this improve our capabilities, but also makes us feel valued as members of the team.

As an experienced team member, what advice would you give to new employees?

I'd say, don't be afraid to ask questions. Embrace the learning curve and take advantage of the expertise around you. Also, always be proactive and demonstrate your passion for what you do. I like to attend workshops, seminars, or online courses to stay up to date with the environmental industry.

Lastly, what’s your perfect Sunday?

Either fishing (surprise surprise!) or visiting the Surrey Hills where I grew up. The landscape is vastly different to Wiltshire's rolling farmland and offers historic woodlands that are designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
